Top Tips for Choosing Standard Doormats

THICKNESS:

Be sure to check when choosing your thickness that there is sufficient clearance under your door to allow the mat to fit.

QUALITY/GRADE:

Although many coir mats look similar there is a difference in the grade or quality (Budget or Luxury). Higher-grade products are constructed differently and are more tightly bound together for less shedding and maximum longevity.

SHEDDING:

These doormats are made from natural coconut fibres called coir and may shed in the first few months of use. This is normal, and not a fault. During this period simply brush or shake the mat to maintain its best appearance.

SIZES:

All dimensions of standard doormat size mats are approximate. Our standard sized mats may vary in size and are sometimes 2-3 centimetres larger than specified. If you are looking for a mat to fit into a mat well you may be better choosing a made to measure mat so that we can guarantee the exact size you have requested.

FAQs

We've put together some of the most frequently asked questions on standard doormats, which we hope will answer any further mat queries.

What type of doormat is best?

This really depends on what your priorities are, and where you're looking to place your doormat. For instance, if you're looking to place your mat outside then a synthetic or rubber doormat will be the most suitable, as it's built to withstand harsh weather conditions, and is very tough. For an indoor mat, coir is always a great choice as it not only looks good, but its coconut fibres are great at trapping dirt, making them an excellent choice for inside the home. It also has the widest choice of thickness from 14mm to 50mm+.

What should I look for in a doormat?

Firstly, good-quality material is essential for longevity. When choosing materials, we'd recommend tough and hard working materials like coir, which is known for its ability to withstand high foot traffic and remove dust, dirt and debris keeping floors clean and dry. You should also take into account the size of the doormat in regards to the entrance area – it should be large enough to accommodate at least two steps to effectively remove dirt from shoes. Lastly, the backing of the doormat is a crucial element for safety and floor protection – we advise looking for options with non-slip backings, such as rubber or PVC, to prevent the mat from sliding.Or adding our anti slip underlay.

What is the basic door mat size?

In the UK, a standard doormat size is approximately 75cm x 45 cm. However, at Coir Mats, our standard sizes go from 60cm x 35cm to 180cm x 60cm, giving you a great selection of sizes to choose from. If you need a specific size that isn't listed on our pages, our made-to-measure option offers a tailored solution for your requirements. We also offer coir-matting-by-the-metre, which allows you to puchase a larger than intended size, which you can then trim down yourself at home.

How many types of door mats are there?

At Coir Mats, we offer a broad selection of door mat types, which include logo mats, cut-to-size mats, coloured, personalised and hand-stitched. All our mats are designed to be long lasting, while also protecting floors from damage and also looking great in your doorway.

How can I protect my floors from damage caused by mud?

Protecting your floors from mud can be helped immensely be selecting the right type of doormat for your home. When brought inside, dirt can scratch and stain flooring, leading to deterioration of floors and carpets over time. For areas with the heaviest foot traffic, commercial-grade coir mats are the most effective for trapping the muddiest dirt and moisture, with medium and budget grades following. Choose as large a doormat as your entrance will allow to ensure more dirt stays on the mat and not the surrounding floor area.
