Coconut matting is a staple material for entrance matting, with coir acting as an environmentally friendly material perfect for scraper mats that will keep your shoes and flooring clean. But as coir is a natural material, how well do coir mats fare with day-to-day use?

In this guide, we will highlight some of the main elements that affect the lifespan of coir, and how you can make your matting last longer!

Eco Friendly Matting.

Coir products are an Eco-friendly and sustainable choice made from natural coconut fibres, with all the materials used for our Standard mats and hand stitched products being entirely biodegradable.

However, as coir mats are made from natural coconut fibres, we are unable to guarantee an exact lifespan for our coir mats.

This is because being an Eco-friendly natural product, each mat will deal with its environment differently, and each batch of our PVC backed coir matting cut to size will behave slightly differently depending on the fibres used.

Environmental damage

We do not recommend our coir products for unprotected outdoor use as over time, they will become weathered. This is the case with any natural material.

Surface moisture from the average wet shoe is perfectly fine, but if the mat has directly been exposed to rain/snow, this is likely to exacerbate the weathering process. We have also found that uneven surfaces beneath the mat can result in irregular wear, which can then break down fibres of the matting and lead to excessive shedding.

Standard coir door mats can be used outdoors, so long as they are allowed to drain or dry after periods of heavy rain or snow.

PVC-backed coir matting, however, struggles to drain and can only withstand a certain amount of exposure to moisture. The PVC backing does not allow the mat to drain, which leads to moisture becoming trapped within the mat.

Once this occurs, the action of people rubbing their feet over the mat will begin to exacerbate any damage, causing the fibres to break away from the mat.

Finally, our Coloured PVC Backed Coir is also not suitable for outdoor use, this is because as PVC backed coir mats are designed to be kept dry in an indoor mat well, the dye we use is not intended for outdoor use either, and can run due to the mat getting wet from the rain.

Shedding

When you first get your mat, you may find that some fibres have been shaken loose in transit, leading to some initial shedding as your mat settles.

To remove these loose coir fibres, we recommend picking them up and simply shaking the fibres loose periodically as a good shake can remove dust, dirt, and loose fibres.

We do not recommend that you run a vacuum over the mat, this is due to the suction of the hover loosening / pulling out more coir fibres and result in pile loss which can further exacerbate the situation. instead we recommend using a A stiff brush like our Coir Mat Cleaning Brush for cleaning your coir mat.

For those who want to avoid the chance of your entrance mats shedding entirely, we recommend other mat materials like our Synthetic Course Man Made Coir Matting.

These are suitable for indoor and unlike natural fibres, many of our synthetic mat materials are non-shedding.

Printed Coir Mats

Our Personalised Coir Doormats have the design printed onto the surface of the matting.

With coir being a brush pile, this means that the printing is created on the ends of the bristles and does not extend across the full length of the bristles.

As such, over time depending on the level of footfall over it, it is expected that the text will wear away.

For indoor coir printed in commercial areas with heavy footfall, our Coir Logo Mats are made via having our coloured coir cut and inlaid into the mat, so the colours of the design run throughout the mat’s full depth.

Printing can also wear away if exposed to the elements, so our personalized doormats are designed to be used indoors or under a covered porch where they will be protected from rain and snow.

This will ensure that they last as long as possible.

For a personalised doormat that will be situated outdoors, we recommend our, as the All Weather Made to Measure Doormat personalisation is specifically designed to not wear away or fade with exposure to the elements.

How Often Should I Replace My Doormats?

The simple answer is when you feel like it.

If you have the mat for decorative use, you will probably want to replace it more often so it looks fresh and clean, but as a tool for keeping your flooring clean, your mat can last years, so the unsatisfying answer is it's up to you.

When you are looking for your perfect entrance matting, you want to make sure you get everything just right. Knowing your mat is going to fit is just as important as knowing how effectively the mat can remove dirt from your shoes and keep your floors clean.

We get a lot of questions about which thickness of entrance mat we would recommend, and so we thought it was time we created a one-stop guide to help choose the right depth for you.

Door Clearance

Door clearance is an important factor when picking an entrance mat. As much as you want to prioritize a mat's aesthetic appeal, you need to know your door will still be able to open.

If your door clearance is very low, it will also be worth checking the floor surface with a spirit level to make sure the floor doesn't have any irregularities that will cause the door to catch the mat.

Coir Mats for Mat Wells

If you are looking to buy coir matting for indoor use in a mat well or recess, we recommend our cut to size range of PVC Backed Coir mats. These entrance mats can be cut to custom sizes and to a bespoke template. You can find more on this in our previous blog: Do You Need An Irregular-Shaped Coir Mat?

Measuring Depth.

To measure the depth of your mat well, you need to measure from the base to the lip. As most of our matting thicknesses are measured in mm, it’s a good idea to take the measurement of your mat well recess in mm as well.

We usually find the flexibility of a tape measure helps when measuring a recess from the bottom to the lip of the surrounding floor so your mat fits flush with the floor.

To ensure you pick a good fit for your entrance mat well, you will want the mat's thickness to be within a milometer of the depth of the mat well to avoid potential tripping hazards.

If your mat well is too deep to do this, then we suggest cutting down a piece of plywood or a similar material of the necessary thickness to fill the remaining depth.

Thickness of our PVC Backed Coir

Our Colored Coir matting is available in 17 mm, with our Black and Grey Coloured Coir mats also being available in 23 mm thickness.

Our Budget PVC backed Coir mats and Heavy Duty commercial grade PVC Backed Coir mats are available in 17 mm and 24 mm thickness.

Our Premium Grade PVC Coir mats are available in 14 mm, 17 mm, 20 mm, 24 mm and 30 mm thickness.

The PVC backing is included in the measured thickness, and the difference in depth is from the pile of the coconut matting.

Other Materials

Our synthetic mats offer a sustainable flooring solution for indoor and outdoor use. Synthetic mat materials are thinner better for outdoor use as they are non biodegradable and non shedding.

Our soft man made, coarse man made, and ribbed man made matting come at 9 mm thickness, and our All Weather Made to Measure Doormats are 5 mm thickness.

Oddly Shaped Mat Wells

Our PVC backed matting can also be cut to an Irregular Shape for a 30% surcharge, catering for mat wells of all shapes and sizes. and for mat wells that are far from a regular shape, our PVC backed products can be trimmed down on site with a Sharp utility knife, simply order a few millimetres oversize and you'll have plenty to work with when you go trim it down.

Free Standing mats

For loose laid and free standing mats, our Standard Coir Mats range from 20mm - 50mm thickness in 5mm increments.

Our Rubber mats come at 10mm thickness.

For our other standard sized products, any latex or PVC backing is always included in the mats thickness

For free standing mats of under 10 mm thickness, it would be best to for synthetic materials like our All Weather Made to Measure Doormats which measure 5 mm thickness and can be made with a rubber boarder when used free standing, which will be accounted for in your provided dimensions.

We don't recommend PVC Backed coir for free standing use as these mats do not have a finished edge, and can shed along the edge as they become compressed with use.

For made to measure free standing coir mats, our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Door Mat is available at 25 mm, 30 mm, 35 mm and 40 mm. This mat is hand woven with natural coconut fibres.

Crafted from the husks of coconuts, coir mats bring with them a unique mix of tradition, utility, and environmental consciousness. The term 'coir' originates from the Tamil and Malayalam languages, meaning 'rope' or 'cord' – a nod to the durable nature of the fibres. The long, brown fibres of the coconut husk, known for their strength and flexibility, are expertly woven into these mats. Unlike their often non-biodegradable counterparts, coir mats offer an environmentally safer option. These mats are constructed by tightly packing the fibres into a strong backing, forming a tough surface adept at trapping dirt, debris, and moisture, making them an ideal choice for doorways.

At Coir Mats, we pride ourselves on our 30+ years of expertise in this industry, and we know that understanding the significance of a coir door mat starts with appreciating its unique composition and the benefits it brings to every household. In this article, we'll look into the world of coir mats, exploring their advantages and understanding why they're an essential addition to your home.

A Brief History of Coir

The history of coir stretches back to ancient times, with the first recorded usage being in India in the Ramanya period (8th century BC–3rd century AD). The Austronesian people were also among the first in the world known to use it, primarily for house and boat building, with Indian sailors navigating to the Gulf of Arabia were also known to have used it as the rope on their ships.

The manufacturing of coir evolved into a big industry in the UK in the mid-19th century, after Captain Widely, alongside Captain Logan and Thomas Treloar, founded the carpet firms of Treloar & Sons in London. Using coir for floor coverings marked a significant milestone in coir history, and from there has continued into the thriving industry it remains today.

Composition and Manufacturing

The unique appeal of coir mats lies in their natural composition and manufacturing process, which combine to create a product of exceptional quality and sustainability.

What is Coir Matting Made Of?

Crafted from natural coconut fibres, coir matting utilizes the outer part of the coconut husk, a material often discarded as waste in other industries. These fibres are renowned for their robustness and resilience, qualities that make them perfectly suited for door mats exposed to heavy foot traffic. The natural texture of these coconut fibres is rough and bristly, which aids in effectively scraping off dirt and moisture from footwear.

Processing Coconuts into Coir

The journey of turning coconuts into coir starts with the harvesting of coconuts. Once collected, the husks are separated from the edible part of the coconut. These husks are then soaked in water for a period, a process known as retting, which helps in loosening the fibres. After retting, the fibres are extracted and cleaned. This process not only separates the long, more durable fibres (which are used for making mats) but also filters out shorter fibres and pith, which can be used for other purposes.

Manufacturing Process of Coir Mats

The manufacturing of coir matting involves several steps. The cleaned and dried coir fibres are first spun into yarn. This yarn is then woven, tufted, or moulded into mats of various shapes and sizes. Depending on the design, natural dyes may be used to add patterns and colours to the mats, boosting their aesthetic appeal. The final step involves trimming the mats to ensure uniformity and quality. This entire process emphasises sustainability, as it utilises a natural byproduct and involves minimal chemical treatments, aligning with eco-friendly manufacturing practices.

Types and Uses of Coir Mats

Favoured for their versatility and durability, coir mats come in a range of types, each designed to cater to different aspects of household and commercial use. They are popular in commercial settings, such as offices, restaurants, and retail stores, where brand visibility is key.

Primary Uses of Coir Mats

Coir matting helps in both domestic and environmental arenas due to its versatility and natural properties. One of the most familiar uses of coir mats is in welcoming visitors to homes. These mats serve as the first point of contact for guests, offering a warm greeting, while also capturing dirt and moisture from shoes, and protecting interior flooring.

Beyond residential settings, coir matting also plays a role in environmental protection. They are used in various ecological projects due to their biodegradable nature and durability. These mats assist in stabilising soils, especially in areas prone to erosion. By holding the soil in place, coir mats provide a stable platform for vegetation to take root, thereby protecting the land and contributing to ecological restoration.

In summary, a coir doormat isn't just easy on the eye and practical for homes but is also instrumental in environmental protection efforts. Their ability to combine functionality with eco-friendliness makes them invaluable in both domestic and environmental applications.

Specialised Uses in Various Settings

It's important to note that coir mats offer a diverse range of applications tailored to different environments. In commercial settings, like offices and retail spaces, heavy-duty coir mats are employed for their toughness and ability to withstand high foot traffic. For residential use, coir mats come in various designs – ranging from simple, elegant textures to more elaborate patterns, suitable for improving the appearance of entranceways. This versatility underscores the indispensable nature of coir mats in various settings, underlining their functionality and adaptability.

Mat Wells and Recesses

Coir mats excel in mat wells and recesses, areas commonly found in both residential and commercial entrances. The cut-to-size mats can be tailored to fit snugly into these recessed spaces, ensuring a seamless and secure installation. The tough and dense nature of coir fibres makes them ideal for high-traffic areas, effectively trapping dirt and moisture while maintaining their shape and integrity.

Benefits of Coir Matting

There are numerous benefits that come with coir matting:

Durability – Primarily due to the tough natural coco fibres sourced from coconut husks. These fibres ensure that the mats withstand heavy foot traffic and harsh weather conditions, making them a long-lasting choice for any home.

Water absorption – These mats have exceptional water absorbency, due to the porous nature of the coconut fibres. This characteristic ensures that moisture and dirt are effectively trapped, keeping your home clean and dry.

Affordability – offering high-quality, long-lasting utility without a hefty price tag. Lastly, the use of natural materials in their construction makes them an environmentally friendly choice. By integrating these natural elements, coir mats not only serve a practical purpose but also contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Practical Aspects of Coir Mats

Coir mats offer a mix of practicality and resilience, making them a superb choice for any home. Renowned for their hard-wearing nature, these mats efficiently trap dirt and moisture, keeping your indoor spaces clean and dry.

Suitability for Different Environments

One would find that the versatility of coir doormats is unmatched, making them suitable for a wide range of environments. For indoor use, these mats provide an excellent first line of defence against dirt, with their tough bristles efficiently scraping off debris from shoes, and keeping your floors clean. This makes them ideal entrance mats in homes and businesses alike.

When it comes to outdoor use, coir mats look great. Because they are so absorbent, when then they are used outdoors it is important to shelter them so that they do not become waterlogged. But a small amount of moisture from shoes is fine, the mat will dry out over time and continue to perform its job brilliantly. If the mat does become very wet, it should be lifted and allowed to dry out thoroughly, as long periods of being wet will cause the mat to rot. It is a completely natural material after all. The natural durability of coir matting, coupled with its ability to handle moisture effectively, makes it a practical and robust choice for any entrance.

Maintenance and Care

To ensure the longevity and effectiveness of coir mats, appropriate maintenance and care are essential. The cleaning method depends on the mud and dirt's condition (wet or dry), the duration of soiling, and the specific type of mat.

• For general maintenance, using a stiff brush effectively removes dried mud and dirt, it's important to ensure that all mud and marks are dry before attempting to remove them. Rubbing at wet mud will simply stain a coir doormat.

• Owners of printed coir mats should opt for gentler cleaning methods to protect the designs, avoiding vigorous scrubbing which could cause fading or damage. Additionally, regular vacuuming using the upholstery attachment can aid in removing loose dirt and preserving the mat's appearance.

Regular cleaning, whether through brushing or gentle vacuuming, combined with careful handling, is key to maintaining your coir entrance mat as a decorative and functional element of your home for many years.

Aesthetic Appeal

Renowned not only for their durability, a coir doormat significantly improves the aesthetic appeal of any home. The intrinsic beauty of these mats lies in their organic look, showcasing fibres that have a distinct, earthy charm. This natural appearance effortlessly complements a wide range of home decor, from classic to contemporary. Also, these mats are available in different colours and design variations, allowing homeowners to select options that perfectly match their personal style and the overall aesthetic of their home. The versatility of coir mats in terms of appearance and design ensures that they can seamlessly integrate into any setting, adding both elegance and warmth to the entrance of your home.

Considerations and Limitations

When it comes to maintaining coir door mats, it's crucial to consider their natural appearance and the range of different colours they come in. However, beyond aesthetic concerns, there are practical considerations to bear in mind.

Compliance With the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Business compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act is essential – ensuring that the mats do not become a tripping hazard or affect mobility for disabled people is essential. This involves regular checks for wear and tear and ensuring the mat lies flat against the floor.

Fire Safety Concerns

While coir mats are known for their durability, it's important to ensure they are kept away from direct heat sources to prevent any fire hazards. The natural fibres of coir can be flammable if not positioned correctly.

Issues of Wearing and Shedding

Lastly, the issues of wearing and shedding are inherent in coir door mats. Over time, these mats can shed fibres, especially in high-traffic areas, which could affect their natural appearance and efficiency. Buying the best quality mats and regular cleaning and gentle care can mitigate this to some extent, but it's important to be aware of this natural process and plan for replacement when necessary.

Conclusion

In summary, coir mats stand out in the entrance matting sector for their unique combination of a natural aesthetic and functional prowess, making them a prime choice for any household. This article has highlighted their key attributes, such as their eco-friendly composition from sustainable coconut fibres, durability, and visual appeal. Coir mats are especially suitable for high-traffic areas due to their proficiency in trapping dirt and moisture. Emphasising their balance between practicality and environmental consciousness, our final recommendation is to acknowledge the long-term advantages of choosing a coir mat. Not only does it show a commitment to eco-friendliness, but it also serves as a durable, stylish, and practical addition to your home, as evidenced by over 30 years of industry experience.

Let’s take a look at some of the most frequently asked questions pet owners have asked about our matting and see if we can help find the right mat for your pets.

What mats do you recommend for muddy paws?

We all love our pets, but during wet and rainy weather, our Dogs and Cats can often trail in their muddy paw prints all over your floors. So, what are the best mats for protecting your floors from their paws?

Synthetic Matting

For households with pets, we recommend using synthetic matting.

This is because synthetic matting is easier to clean, either with warm soapy water or our All Weather matting is machine washable. This also means that should your pets not want to do their business outside, smells like urine will wash out more easily where they can linger on more absorbent natural materials.

Most synthetic mats are also non-shedding, meaning a synthetic mat will be less likely to lose fibres to your cat's clawing.

For personalised mats, our All Weather Matting can be made for indoor or outdoor use. This product has our widest colour range and is available in your own unique artwork.

We also have our Outdoor/Indoor Personalised Photo Door Mat. After all, what makes a greater dog doormat than a picture of your own dog?

Take a look at our Coarse man made and Soft Man Made Coir Matting, available in a variety 11 different colours. These mats are 10mm thick and available to be cut to size and in irregular shaped templates.

Are Coir Mats Safe for Dogs?

While Natural Coir matting is safe for animals, your four legged friends may not be safe for the mat.

While a coir mats’ natural biodegradable fibres are better for the planet, they are quite absorbent, making them nearly impossible to clean should your pet decide to urinate on or make a mess of your mat.

Dogs can also decide to claw and dig into coir mats, which will tear up fibres causing excess shedding and damage to the mat.

How do you get dog urine out of a doormat?

Urine can be scrubbed out of coir however this process often causes more damage and loss of fibres to the mat. Smells like urine can linger on more absorbent natural materials and be tough to remove but will be easier to wash out on synthetic materials.

To clean synthetic mats such as our Soft Man Made Coir, simply scrub the mat with a cloth or soft brush and warm soapy water and the dirt washes away quite easily.

Are your mats machine washable?

Products like the All-Weather mats are machine washable mats you can toss in the washing machine, although larger mats may be a bit heavy and could damage the machine so it is best to check what your machine can handle in terms of weight before doing this.

Machine washable mats are great for pet owners and those with a more active lifestyle as tough dirt that would otherwise cling to a mat wash away, as well as Rubber Outdoor mats, which in most cases can simply be cleaned with a quick wipe.

What doormats don’t get waterlogged?

PVC Backed matting can get waterlogged this is why we DO NOT recommend our PVC backed coir mats for outdoor or covered outdoor use.

Our synthetic matting can easily be dried off without lasting water damage as it is not biodegradable. This is also why synthetic mats are our recommended product for outdoor use, as they are better suited for coping with damp conditions.

If you want a pet recommended mat with minimal risk of becoming waterlogged, then our All-Weather Made to Measure Doormats can be outfitted with drainage holes for outdoor use, as this allows the water to drain through the backing of the mat. These mats are also made with non slip backing, which is helpful in wet conditions to help maintain grip.

Synthetic mats are more durable than natural coir or carpet matting in wet conditions, but after a period of heavy rainfall, it is always best to let mats have time to dry. Simply hang the mat up to dry over a fence, railing or banister and wait for both the mat and the area it sits in to dry.

How do I choose a quality doormat?

A Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat - rolled up and ready to go

In the pursuit of environmentally conscious living, individuals and businesses are increasingly turning to sustainable alternatives for everyday products.

Crafted from coconut husks, coconut mats, commonly known as coir doormats are a popular choice of entrance mats due to their versatility, durability, and eco-friendly properties.

The husk of coconuts is usually waste material and disposed of, so taking the husk of the coconut, spinning it into yarn and then weaving this together to create coir matting is reusing material that would normally go to landfill, starting on the path of a more environmentally friendly living.

Let's explore the eco-friendly advantages of coconut mats and their role in promoting a greener future in today's world.

What are the benefits of coconut mats?

Renewable Resource

Perhaps the most important green advantage of coir mats is that they harness a renewable resource – coconuts are plentiful in the tropics and their husks easily yield coir fibres.

This sustainable method doesn’t involve cutting down trees, so they are allowed to continue producing fruit, thus reducing pressure on natural ecosystems, with less deforestation, so biodiversity in coconut-growing regions is also preserved.

Biodegradability

Unlike rubber or plastic, coconut mats are biodegradable, meaning that at the end of their lifecycle, they will naturally decompose without harming the environment.

Made from robust natural fibres, the coir mats biodegrade over time into soil nutrients, and they are also a waste-free product that cuts down on receptacles for landfill waste. So once, your 100% coir doormat is no longer fit for use, simply place it on your compost bin to degrade.

Low Environmental Footprint

Coconut mats have a much lower carbon footprint than other materials, as the process used to produce them requires a little more energy than that already expended in the extraction of their coir fibres. The harvesting of coir fibres usually occurs manually or with the help of simple machinery, none of which demands much energy or produces great quantities of rubbish.

In addition, coconut mats are usually made with traditional, low-carbon footprint techniques that makes them very resource-efficient and without harmful chemicals or synthetic additives. For these reasons, coconut mats are a plant-based and, more generally, more eco-friendly alternative to plastic or other materials.

Versatile Applications

Apart from the environmental benefits that coir mats provide, their versatility with a wide range of applications makes them an excellent choice for any residential and commercial application.

Our Standard Doormat range comes in a range of sizes and thicknesses along with 2 types of edge finishes. From the more modern Latex Edge to the traditional Braided Edge. Standard mats are a great option for freestanding across a range of entranceways from back doors to patio doors. Our standard mat range covers the lot.

If you are looking for a bespoke size, shape or would like a 100% coir mat that can sit in a mat well/ recess then our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat is the way to go. Made here in our UK workshop by a team of skilled craftspeople. They make sure that is exactly the size needed before despatched.

The benefits of coir doormats span their natural aesthetic, durability, and hard-wearing properties. They are suitable for indoor and most outdoor environments, adding a touch of eco-conscious style to any space.

By choosing coconut mats as an alternative to conventional materials, you can contribute to the preservation of natural resources and the promotion of a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.

Are coir mats eco-friendly?

Our woven backed standard coco coir doormats or Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat are made from woven coir backing. This is the coconut husk that is spun into twine, it is then woven on a large loom to create the base of the coir doormats.

Our Standard mats are then finished with either a braided edge, which again is made from coir twine or they have a latex edge finish, again making these mats completely eco-friendly and are great at removing stubborn dirt from the bottom of shoes before entering the home.

Our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Mats have the same woven backing as the standard mats. The finished edges of these mats are made from twine. These eco-friendly products are great for any eco-conscious person using natural materials but with the full functionality that is expected of a doormat; trapping dirt from heavy foot traffic.

What are the pros and cons of coir mats?

100% Coir Doormats are made from genuine coconut fibres which means they have their pros but also their cons.

Benefits of a coir doormat

  • Eco friendliness
  • Natural fibres
  • Bristley strong fibres
  • Withstand heavy foot traffic
  • Removal of dirt and moisture from the bottom of shoes
  • A great natural look for home décor

Cons of coir mats

  • Made from natural fibres so will degrade over time
  • Not for use outdoors and directly exposed to the elements. Coir is a great water absorbent so it will hold on to any water, making the natural fibres degrade quicker.
  • All coir mats will initially shead but this will die down over the first week. Simply pick the mat up and give it a shake to dislodge any loose fibres. Or if the mat is too large or heavy then vacuum with an upholstery attachment.

An Introduction To Coir

Coir, a natural fibre extracted from coconut husks, is renowned for its durability and eco-friendliness. It finds application in products like ropes, brushes and, notably, floor mats. In the United Kingdom, coir matting is beloved for its allure and exceptional dirt-trapping capabilities, making it a practical choice for commercial and personal environments.

What Is Coir Matting?

Coir matting is a type of doormat made from coir fibres.

These mats are ideal for high-traffic areas due to their robustness and ability to withstand wear and tear. They are also excellent for absorbing moisture, making them perfect for entrances and hallways. The natural colour and texture of coir matting add a warm, earthy tone to any space.

For the purpose of this guide, the type of mats you will be trimming and installing in a space or mat well/recess would be:

For any mats that have a border on such as our Standard Mats or Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat, these are NOT to be cut, as the mat will unravel.

Tools For Measuring And Cutting Coir Matting

To cut your coir matting accurately, you will need a few essential tools:

Tools to measuring and cutting coir matting
  • A sharp utility knife for cutting.
  • A straight edge or ruler for precise measurements.
  • A measuring tape to determine the size of the area.
  • A marker or chalk for marking the cutting line.
  • Protective gloves to ensure safety during cutting.

How Do I Cut Coconut Matting To Size?

Let's look at the simple steps needed to size and cut your coir matting.

1. Measuring Your Space

Begin by measuring the floor area where you plan to place the new coir mat.

Use a tape measure to get the length and width, and always double-check the measurements to size coir matting for an exact fit. Consider door clearance and measure the mat's position in relation to other elements in the room. When measuring, ensure that the coir matting upside is facing up, as this will help you better understand how the mat will look and fit in the intended space.

2. Planning Your Cut

Flip the mat over, so the PVC side is facing up. This will give you the cleanest cut.

Lay the coir matting flat on a solid surface. Using your measurements, carefully mark the cutting line on the mat with a marker or chalk.

Ensure the lines are straight and visible. Create a paper template to outline the required shape on the mat for spaces of an unusual or irregular shape.

3. Cutting The Coir Mat

Wear protective gloves and use a sharp utility knife. Cut along the marked line, applying steady pressure for a clean cut.

If using a knife, make sure the blade is sharp otherwise you may have to run the blade along the line multiple times to penetrate through the PVC back.

4. Finishing Touches

After cutting, place the mat in the area or mat well/ recess. Extra trimming may be required.

Maintenance and Placement

Proper maintenance and correct placement are crucial for the longevity of your coir matting. To maintain, regularly shake off or vacuum the mat to remove trapped dirt and debris. Avoid exposing the mat to prolonged moisture, as it can cause the fibres to degrade. When placing your cut coir mat, ensure it lies flat and does not obstruct door movement.

The ideal placement for any PVC Backed coir mat is indoors and in a mat well/ recess.

Understanding Coloured Coir Doormats

Coloured coir doormats are a fantastic addition to any home or office entrance. They stand out from regular doormats due to their vibrant colours, adding a touch of personality and charm to your doorway.

These coir doormats are not just decorative but are also quite functional, they are popular due to their durability, natural appeal, and effectiveness in trapping dirt, moisture and debris at the door.

The Composition of Coloured Coir Mats

Coir mats are crafted from coir fibres derived from coconut husks, known for their durability. These mats, also known as coconut matting, are then dyed in various hues, offering consumers a wide array of shades to choose from. Here at Coir Mats we have 11 different colours to choose from.

This combination of natural fibres and vibrant colours makes coir mats an attractive and practical choice for door mats.

Benefits of Choosing a Coloured Coir Mat

Investing in a high-quality coloured coir mat comes with a host of benefits. All of our coloured coir mats are PVC-backed, meaning they are best used indoors and in a mat well/ recess

The base coir fibre is the natural golden brown colour of our Premium PVC Backed Coir which is then fully dyed. By dying the entire fibre the coloured coir mat can maintain its vibrant colour for longer, even in high-traffic areas, provided they are properly maintained.

Preserving the Colour: Avoiding Fading and Discolouration

Placement Away from Direct Sunlight

Much like our skin requires shielding from intense UV rays, your coir doormat also needs the same protection. Exposure to direct sunlight can speed up the fading process of the doormat’s colours. Placing the mat in a shaded or semi-shaded area not only protects it from sunlight but also extends its lifespan by avoiding constant exposure to sunlight.

Proper Cleaning Techniques

When it comes to cleaning your coir doormat, gentle is the way to go.

Brush Regularly

Allow any wet mud or dirt to fully dry on the mat, then use a coir matting cleaning brush to remove the A layer of dirt without damaging the fibres.

Trim Loose Fibres

When you first receive the mat or overtime the mat may have what in the industry is called "rats tails" these are simply twisted coir fibres that haven't been trimmed. Rather than pulling them out of the mat, which will leave a hole. Simply trim with sharp scissors.

Shake or Vacuum

Begin by shaking the mat vigorously to dislodge loose dirt, dust, and debris. However, if the mat is too large and heavy you can also vacuum the mat on a lower setting with an upholstery attachment to remove remaining debris after shaking and beating it.

Avoid Excessive Moisture

Coloured Coir Matting should be placed inside as the colour may run if they get wet and, while coir mats are designed to absorb moisture, excessive water can cause coir mats to deteriorate prematurely.

If there is exposure to excessive moisture, hang the mat vertically or lay it flat in a well-ventilated area and allow it to dry completely before placing it back in its usual position.

Rotate the Mat

Extend the lifespan of your coloured coir mat by rotating it regularly. This helps distribute wear and tear evenly across the surface of the mat, preventing it from wearing out in specific areas. Consider rotating the mat every few months or as needed to maintain its integrity.

By following these tips and tricks, you can effectively maintain your coloured coir mat and ensure that it remains functional and attractive for years to come.

Regular Maintenance Routine for Coloured Coir Mats

Coir Matting Cleaning Brush removed any dried dirt from the top of your coloured coir mat

Keeping your coir doormat vibrant and clean is a continuous task. Regular maintenance is crucial, which includes dry cleaning methods and spot cleaning for stains. Regular vacuuming or shaking can effectively remove trapped dirt, contributing to the mat’s longevity and maintaining cleanliness in your home.

Additionally, you should clean the area beneath and around the mat to stop dirt from spreading back onto the newly cleaned doormat.

Dry Cleaning Methods

Dry cleaning methods are a great way to clean a coir doormat. Gently use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to lift and remove dirt. This will help protect delicate surfaces. You can also shake the mat vigorously outdoors to dislodge visible dirt.

For more stubborn dirt, try beating the mat against a wall or with a broom handle. This trio of vacuuming, shaking, and beating is key to preserving the colour and durability of your coir doormats.

Spot Cleaning for Stains

Spot cleaning is an effective method for handling stubborn stains on your coir doormat. For mud stains, let the mud dry completely before attempting to clean it with a stiff brush. For substances like chewing gum, a freeze spray can be used.

Pet stains, particularly urine or feces, can be challenging to remove due to the mat’s absorbent nature, and in severe cases, may necessitate replacement.

Gentle Scrubbing with Stiff Brushes

When cleaning your coir doormat, a stiff brush is better to remove dried dirt however for lighter marks it might be too harsh, so soft brushes are your go-to tool. They can effectively dislodge stubborn dirt without causing damage to the fibres or the colours. For effective cleaning, let any stains dry completely before brushing them gently.

Also, avoid jet washing as it could lead to waterlogging and potential damage to the mat’s fibres and colours. Remember, maintaining the longevity and appearance of your coloured coir doormat relies on using correct cleaning techniques.

Natural Solutions Over Harsh Chemicals

When it comes to deep cleaning, natural solutions prove to be the best choice. Using natural powder cleaners like bicarbonate of soda can tackle heavy soiling effectively while preserving the mat’s vibrant colours.

Dealing with Specific Stains on Coloured Coir Mats

Each type of stain requires a specific treatment. Dry foam or cleaning powder can be used for challenging stains, including oil or grease.

Pet stains, particularly urine, can be notoriously difficult to remove due to the mat’s absorbent nature, and if it is a consistent problem, looking at a synthetic alternative may be best as it does not absorb moisture.

Organic Stain Removal Techniques

Organic stains can be a challenge, but with the right techniques, they can be effectively removed. Baking soda is known for its effectiveness in removing tough stains from a variety of surfaces. Its neutralizing properties make it especially useful for organic stains that carry odours.

Handling Oil and Grease

Handling oil and grease stains on coir mats requires specific techniques. Applying a dry foam or cleaning powder can effectively tackle these stains. This method works by absorbing the oil or grease, making it easier to remove. Remember, the key is to act quickly to prevent the stain from setting in.

Ensuring Longevity of Coloured Coir Doormats

Securing the long life of your coloured coir doormat goes beyond mere routine cleaning. Proper maintenance, including for all Coloured Coir Matting as they are pvc backed mats used indoors only and in a mat well/recess and regular rotation, is crucial.

Signs that indicate it might be time to replace your mat include fading colour, flattened fibers, or cracks in any rubber backing. Regularly rotating your doormat can also ensure even wear and tear, preventing premature deterioration in one area due to concentrated weight and pressure.

Rotation and Replacement Advice

It’s crucial to rotate your coir doormat from time to time to facilitate uniform wear and prolong its lifespan. This helps prevent premature deterioration in one area due to concentrated weight and pressure.

A well-maintained coir doormat can be expected a good length of time before it may require replacement. Keeping an eye on the state of your mat and replacing it when necessary, ensures that it continues to serve its purpose effectively.

Seasonal Care for Your Coloured Coir Doormat

Your coir doormat needs special attention with changing seasons. Here are some tips to keep it in good condition:

  • In winter, protect your mat from damaging elements like snow, ice, and potentially salt.
  • In spring, more frequent cleaning is necessary to remove allergens that can dull the colors.
  • In summer and autumn, airing out your doormat can prevent damp-related issues.

With these seasonal care tips, your coir doormat will not only look good but also last longer.

Summary

Coloured coir doormats are not only visually appealing but also functional, effectively trapping dirt and debris. But to keep these mats looking their best, proper care and maintenance are crucial. From regular and deep cleaning to seasonal care, every step contributes to the longevity of your doormat. So, armed with these tips, you can now ensure that your coloured coir doormat remains vibrant and welcoming for years to come!

Coir doormats are a sustainable and stylish addition to your home. Made from coconut husks, these eco-friendly mats look great and have many significant advantages.

An Introduction to Coir Mats

Welcome to the world of coir, a remarkable and versatile material used in matting for homes around the globe. Coir mats, often called coco coir doormats, are derived from the husks of coconuts and offer a unique blend of beauty and practicality, making them an ideal choice for your doorstep.

What Is Coir?

Coir, a natural fibre, originates from the husk of coconuts. This tough and resilient material is harvested from coconut shells, offering an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fibres. The process involves separating the coir's outer layer from the inner shell, resulting in a durable and moisture-resistant product commonly utilised in coir doormats or entrance mats

What Are The Benefits?

Apart from just being visually appealing, coir doormats offer many advantages;

Eco-Friendly

Coir mats, made from the natural fibres of coconut husks, are an environmentally friendly choice. These natural products have no impact on coconut trees during extraction, making them an environmentally friendly and sustainable choice. Moreover, as they are made of natural raw materials, coconut husk coir door mats naturally break down over time, reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfills.

Durability and Longevity

Coir entrance mats are unbeatable when it comes to withstanding wear and tear. Crafted from coir fibres derived from coconut husks, these mats are highly suitable for areas with high levels of foot traffic. Whether it's the classic brown coir or those with additional PVC backing for extra strength, these mats resist abrasion and degradation, ensuring they remain functional and attractive for years, even under frequent use.

Design Versatility

The natural, rustic look of coir, particularly the classic brown coir, adds a warm, welcoming touch to any home décor. These entrance mats come in various designs, from simple elegance to intricate patterns, allowing customisation to your personal style. Beyond the natural coir, these mats can be dyed, printed, or customised to fit any aesthetic, making them a versatile choice for any home.

Practicality and Safety

One of the standout features of coir doormats is their ability to trap and retain dirt, mud and moisture effectively—ensuring that your indoor spaces stay clean and neat throughout. This feature is especially beneficial during weather conditions such as rain or snow. Moreover, the natural texture provides a surface that's not slippery, adding a safety element and reducing the chance of accidents in damp situations.

Cost-Effectiveness

The longevity and low maintenance needs of coir mats, particularly those with durable PVC backing, make them a cost-effective investment for the home. Unlike other types of mats that may require frequent replacements, coir mats stand the test of time, providing lasting value and reducing the need for repeated purchases.

Indoor and Outdoor Use

Exceptionally adaptable, coir mats excel in both indoor and outdoor environments. Their innate resistance to sunlight and great water absorbency ensure they withstand the rigours of outdoor elements without significant wear. In very wet locations it's important to shelter the coir door mat to prevent water logging. Inside the home environment, they are an effective barrier, preventing outdoor dirt and debris from entering your living spaces.

Maintenance Is Simple

Maintaining your coir mats, including the versatile coir doormat and the robust entrance mat, is refreshingly straightforward. These mats, crafted from natural fibres, can be easily kept clean with regular care. A quick shake or vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment can remove dirt from the tough bristles for everyday maintenance. You can brush the mat with a firm brush when a deeper clean is required. It's essential to make sure that these natural products, which are very absorbent are not cleaned with water. This is crucial in preventing staining and mildew or mould growth, thus preserving both the appearance and longevity of your doormat.

Conclusions

Coir doormats are a superb addition to any home, keeping a blend of lovely natural products and functionality. They are eco-friendly, durable and practical for keeping your floors clean while adding style to your living spaces.

FAQs

Let's answer some of your most frequently asked questions about the benefits of coir doormats:

Are Coir Mats Good For Indoor Use?

Absolutely! Coir mats are a great choice for indoor spaces. Their natural fibre construction is highly effective at trapping dirt and moisture, making them an ideal choice for entrance areas. Besides functionality, coir mats also add a welcoming natural touch to any indoor setting. To ensure their longevity and prevent any slip hazards, it's important to place them in areas where they can stay dry.

What Material Is Best For Doormats?

The best material for doormats varies based on individual needs and preferences. Coir is often considered a top choice due to its durability, eco-friendliness, and effective dirt and moisture-trapping capabilities. While materials like rubber, polypropylene, or nylon offer benefits such as increased water resistance or different aesthetics, coir matting stands out because of its qualities of being mindful of the environment while remaining resilient. This makes it a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor settings.

Can Coir Mats Be Left In The Rain?

Coir mats are incredibly durable and can withstand a certain amount of moisture. However, to prolong their lifespan, avoiding exposure to excessive moisture is advisable. Ever wondered what the difference is between Coir Matting and Coconut Matting?

The long and short answer is there isn't any difference, Coir Matting and Coconut Matting are the same type of entrance matting.

Coir matting is often known as Coconut matting. Natural coir fibres are a short, coarse texture fibre, extracted from the outer shell of coconuts, the husk. The coconut fibres appear when the coconut is mature and ready to be processed.

A dried coconut that has been split open showing the coconut or coir fibres ready to be extracted

How does it get from a coconut to the Coir fibres we need?

Once the coconut is mature and ready to be processed the husk will be left to soak in water over several months. In this time bacteria will eat away at the husk leaving only the raw coir fibres behind. Those coir fibres will then be placed inside a rotating drum which will help them to significantly loosen up. When the fibres are loose and ready to be used, they are then split into various groups depending on their length.

How the fibres are then made into a Coir mat

The coconut husk that has been extracted and spun into the coir yarn

Once the fibres have been extracted and split into their different groups, they are then spun into yarn using traditional wheels. Now they have been spun into yarn, they are then placed into big yarn balls.

Now the Coir yarn is ready they are woven together in various ways and secured to make the natural coir coconut matting we all know. This means Coir mats are available in numerous styles and sizes, so you can find the perfect mat for your home.

Our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat is lovingly hand-stitched here in our UK workshop from the highest quality coir. The natural coconut fibres make the mat tough enough to scrape the unwanted dirt and debris from your shoes.

100% Coir Matting that has been woven together, this is then used to make our high quality coir matting

Why is Coir the best way to go?

There are many reasons why a coir doormat is the best option, for residential or business over a regular mat. If you are unsure if it is the right matting for you, here are some reasons below:

Eco - Friendly

Our Handstitched and Standard Coir Doormats are 100% biodegradable and require no special disposal steps. Once you are ready to discard your Coir mat it can be simply put on your garden or compost bin, as it is an organic material it will not sustain any environmental damage.

Durable

Coir matting is made out of tough natural fibres meaning if you maintain them correctly, they can last for a long time before needing to be replaced. Coconut coir matting effectively traps dirt off shoes before it has the chance to be dragged through your home. For more information on maintaining your coir mat prior or purchasing take a look at our Care and Maintenance tips blog alternatively, all our orders are sent out with a care and fitting guide.

Removal of Water Moisture from shoes

The coconut matting can absorb significant amounts of moisture, which makes them ideal for stopping wet shoe prints from tracing through your house! It will also help prevent slips and falls by taking the moisture off the bottom of your shoes.

Please note, to help with the longevity of your coir matting we do not recommend placing any coir mat outside where it is directly exposed to the elements. As it is made from a natural material, if left sitting in water for long periods, this will increase the degradation of the coir matting. In the event of your coir matting getting wet. We recommend picking the mat up and allowing the mat and the area it is placed on to fully dry off before placing your coir coconut matting back down.

The different types of Coir matting we offer

PVC Backed Coir Matting

Our PVC Backed Coir Mats are perfect for mat wells. Here in our UK workshop, we will cut your mat to the size you have specified on your order. However, they can be also trimmed down to an exact fit in situ if you have an irregular shaped mat well.

PVC Backed Coir can be trimmed at home using a sharp utility knife

We do not recommend PVC Backed Coir for outdoor use as the PVC backing prevents the water from running away. However, if it becomes wet from shoes or umbrellas that is no problem as that’s what it is designed for; to remove the dirt and debris to stop it from tracing through your home.

Coloured Coir Coir Matting

Our Coloured Coir is also PVC backed meaning it is recommended for mat well use.

This matting is for indoor use only, if coloured coconut matting gets wet the colour will run.

Our coloured coir mailing comes in 17mm, however, for the popular colours like Black and Grey, these also come in 23mm thickness. For deeper mat wells, simply place a piece of plywood in the appropriate thickness underneath. Ensuring the top of the bristles lay flush with the floor to minimize the trip hazard.

Hand Stitched Made to Measure Coir Matting

Our Bespoke Hand Made Coir mats have a woven backing which makes them perfect for both mat wells and free standing. These mats are lovingly handcrafted in our workshop with the best quality natural coconut fibres. They are made in 4 different thicknesses, to suit any area or mat well.

The personalized element is a perfect choice to add that finishing touch to your home. It is available in thicknesses from 14mm up to 30mm.

What is an alternative to coir matting?

The best alternative to coir matting is our Synthetic Coir Matting range, our most popular product is the Soft Man Made Coir Matting. This is a cut to size product that is 10mm thick.

It is a little softer underfoot than natural coir matting as it has more of a looped plie, than the bristle plie of natural coir matting.

It comes in a range of colours to help match to any decors. The best attribute of synthetic coir matting is the ability to withstand a heavier amount of moisture, along with harder cleaning. Unlike natural coir mats that cannot be saturated synthetic fibres do not take on water and will dry out much quicker.
