A Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat - rolled up and ready to go

In the pursuit of environmentally conscious living, individuals and businesses are increasingly turning to sustainable alternatives for everyday products.

Crafted from coconut husks, coconut mats, commonly known as coir doormats are a popular choice of entrance mats due to their versatility, durability, and eco-friendly properties.

The husk of coconuts is usually waste material and disposed of, so taking the husk of the coconut, spinning it into yarn and then weaving this together to create coir matting is reusing material that would normally go to landfill, starting on the path of a more environmentally friendly living.

Let's explore the eco-friendly advantages of coconut mats and their role in promoting a greener future in today's world.

What are the benefits of coconut mats?

Renewable Resource

Perhaps the most important green advantage of coir mats is that they harness a renewable resource – coconuts are plentiful in the tropics and their husks easily yield coir fibres.

This sustainable method doesn’t involve cutting down trees, so they are allowed to continue producing fruit, thus reducing pressure on natural ecosystems, with less deforestation, so biodiversity in coconut-growing regions is also preserved.

Biodegradability

Unlike rubber or plastic, coconut mats are biodegradable, meaning that at the end of their lifecycle, they will naturally decompose without harming the environment.

Made from robust natural fibres, the coir mats biodegrade over time into soil nutrients, and they are also a waste-free product that cuts down on receptacles for landfill waste. So once, your 100% coir doormat is no longer fit for use, simply place it on your compost bin to degrade.

Low Environmental Footprint

Coconut mats have a much lower carbon footprint than other materials, as the process used to produce them requires a little more energy than that already expended in the extraction of their coir fibres. The harvesting of coir fibres usually occurs manually or with the help of simple machinery, none of which demands much energy or produces great quantities of rubbish.

In addition, coconut mats are usually made with traditional, low-carbon footprint techniques that makes them very resource-efficient and without harmful chemicals or synthetic additives. For these reasons, coconut mats are a plant-based and, more generally, more eco-friendly alternative to plastic or other materials.

Versatile Applications

Apart from the environmental benefits that coir mats provide, their versatility with a wide range of applications makes them an excellent choice for any residential and commercial application.

Our Standard Doormat range comes in a range of sizes and thicknesses along with 2 types of edge finishes. From the more modern Latex Edge to the traditional Braided Edge. Standard mats are a great option for freestanding across a range of entranceways from back doors to patio doors. Our standard mat range covers the lot.

If you are looking for a bespoke size, shape or would like a 100% coir mat that can sit in a mat well/ recess then our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat is the way to go. Made here in our UK workshop by a team of skilled craftspeople. They make sure that is exactly the size needed before despatched.

The benefits of coir doormats span their natural aesthetic, durability, and hard-wearing properties. They are suitable for indoor and most outdoor environments, adding a touch of eco-conscious style to any space.

By choosing coconut mats as an alternative to conventional materials, you can contribute to the preservation of natural resources and the promotion of a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.

Are coir mats eco-friendly?

Our woven backed standard coco coir doormats or Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat are made from woven coir backing. This is the coconut husk that is spun into twine, it is then woven on a large loom to create the base of the coir doormats.

Our Standard mats are then finished with either a braided edge, which again is made from coir twine or they have a latex edge finish, again making these mats completely eco-friendly and are great at removing stubborn dirt from the bottom of shoes before entering the home.

Our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Mats have the same woven backing as the standard mats. The finished edges of these mats are made from twine. These eco-friendly products are great for any eco-conscious person using natural materials but with the full functionality that is expected of a doormat; trapping dirt from heavy foot traffic.

What are the pros and cons of coir mats?

100% Coir Doormats are made from genuine coconut fibres which means they have their pros but also their cons.

Benefits of a coir doormat

  • Eco friendliness
  • Natural fibres
  • Bristley strong fibres
  • Withstand heavy foot traffic
  • Removal of dirt and moisture from the bottom of shoes
  • A great natural look for home décor

Cons of coir mats

  • Made from natural fibres so will degrade over time
  • Not for use outdoors and directly exposed to the elements. Coir is a great water absorbent so it will hold on to any water, making the natural fibres degrade quicker.
  • All coir mats will initially shead but this will die down over the first week. Simply pick the mat up and give it a shake to dislodge any loose fibres. Or if the mat is too large or heavy then vacuum with an upholstery attachment.

An Introduction To Coir

Coir, a natural fibre extracted from coconut husks, is renowned for its durability and eco-friendliness. It finds application in products like ropes, brushes and, notably, floor mats. In the United Kingdom, coir matting is beloved for its allure and exceptional dirt-trapping capabilities, making it a practical choice for commercial and personal environments.

What Is Coir Matting?

Coir matting is a type of doormat made from coir fibres.

These mats are ideal for high-traffic areas due to their robustness and ability to withstand wear and tear. They are also excellent for absorbing moisture, making them perfect for entrances and hallways. The natural colour and texture of coir matting add a warm, earthy tone to any space.

For the purpose of this guide, the type of mats you will be trimming and installing in a space or mat well/recess would be:

For any mats that have a border on such as our Standard Mats or Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat, these are NOT to be cut, as the mat will unravel.

Tools For Measuring And Cutting Coir Matting

To cut your coir matting accurately, you will need a few essential tools:

Tools to measuring and cutting coir matting
  • A sharp utility knife for cutting.
  • A straight edge or ruler for precise measurements.
  • A measuring tape to determine the size of the area.
  • A marker or chalk for marking the cutting line.
  • Protective gloves to ensure safety during cutting.

How Do I Cut Coconut Matting To Size?

Let's look at the simple steps needed to size and cut your coir matting.

1. Measuring Your Space

Begin by measuring the floor area where you plan to place the new coir mat.

Use a tape measure to get the length and width, and always double-check the measurements to size coir matting for an exact fit. Consider door clearance and measure the mat's position in relation to other elements in the room. When measuring, ensure that the coir matting upside is facing up, as this will help you better understand how the mat will look and fit in the intended space.

2. Planning Your Cut

Flip the mat over, so the PVC side is facing up. This will give you the cleanest cut.

Lay the coir matting flat on a solid surface. Using your measurements, carefully mark the cutting line on the mat with a marker or chalk.

Ensure the lines are straight and visible. Create a paper template to outline the required shape on the mat for spaces of an unusual or irregular shape.

3. Cutting The Coir Mat

Wear protective gloves and use a sharp utility knife. Cut along the marked line, applying steady pressure for a clean cut.

If using a knife, make sure the blade is sharp otherwise you may have to run the blade along the line multiple times to penetrate through the PVC back.

4. Finishing Touches

After cutting, place the mat in the area or mat well/ recess. Extra trimming may be required.

Maintenance and Placement

Proper maintenance and correct placement are crucial for the longevity of your coir matting. To maintain, regularly shake off or vacuum the mat to remove trapped dirt and debris. Avoid exposing the mat to prolonged moisture, as it can cause the fibres to degrade. When placing your cut coir mat, ensure it lies flat and does not obstruct door movement.

The ideal placement for any PVC Backed coir mat is indoors and in a mat well/ recess.

Understanding Coloured Coir Doormats

Coloured coir doormats are a fantastic addition to any home or office entrance. They stand out from regular doormats due to their vibrant colours, adding a touch of personality and charm to your doorway.

These coir doormats are not just decorative but are also quite functional, they are popular due to their durability, natural appeal, and effectiveness in trapping dirt, moisture and debris at the door.

The Composition of Coloured Coir Mats

Coir mats are crafted from coir fibres derived from coconut husks, known for their durability. These mats, also known as coconut matting, are then dyed in various hues, offering consumers a wide array of shades to choose from. Here at Coir Mats we have 11 different colours to choose from.

This combination of natural fibres and vibrant colours makes coir mats an attractive and practical choice for door mats.

Benefits of Choosing a Coloured Coir Mat

Investing in a high-quality coloured coir mat comes with a host of benefits. All of our coloured coir mats are PVC-backed, meaning they are best used indoors and in a mat well/ recess

The base coir fibre is the natural golden brown colour of our Premium PVC Backed Coir which is then fully dyed. By dying the entire fibre the coloured coir mat can maintain its vibrant colour for longer, even in high-traffic areas, provided they are properly maintained.

Preserving the Colour: Avoiding Fading and Discolouration

Placement Away from Direct Sunlight

Much like our skin requires shielding from intense UV rays, your coir doormat also needs the same protection. Exposure to direct sunlight can speed up the fading process of the doormat’s colours. Placing the mat in a shaded or semi-shaded area not only protects it from sunlight but also extends its lifespan by avoiding constant exposure to sunlight.

Proper Cleaning Techniques

When it comes to cleaning your coir doormat, gentle is the way to go.

Brush Regularly

Allow any wet mud or dirt to fully dry on the mat, then use a coir matting cleaning brush to remove the A layer of dirt without damaging the fibres.

Trim Loose Fibres

When you first receive the mat or overtime the mat may have what in the industry is called "rats tails" these are simply twisted coir fibres that haven't been trimmed. Rather than pulling them out of the mat, which will leave a hole. Simply trim with sharp scissors.

Shake or Vacuum

Begin by shaking the mat vigorously to dislodge loose dirt, dust, and debris. However, if the mat is too large and heavy you can also vacuum the mat on a lower setting with an upholstery attachment to remove remaining debris after shaking and beating it.

Avoid Excessive Moisture

Coloured Coir Matting should be placed inside as the colour may run if they get wet and, while coir mats are designed to absorb moisture, excessive water can cause coir mats to deteriorate prematurely.

If there is exposure to excessive moisture, hang the mat vertically or lay it flat in a well-ventilated area and allow it to dry completely before placing it back in its usual position.

Rotate the Mat

Extend the lifespan of your coloured coir mat by rotating it regularly. This helps distribute wear and tear evenly across the surface of the mat, preventing it from wearing out in specific areas. Consider rotating the mat every few months or as needed to maintain its integrity.

By following these tips and tricks, you can effectively maintain your coloured coir mat and ensure that it remains functional and attractive for years to come.

Regular Maintenance Routine for Coloured Coir Mats

Coir Matting Cleaning Brush removed any dried dirt from the top of your coloured coir mat

Keeping your coir doormat vibrant and clean is a continuous task. Regular maintenance is crucial, which includes dry cleaning methods and spot cleaning for stains. Regular vacuuming or shaking can effectively remove trapped dirt, contributing to the mat’s longevity and maintaining cleanliness in your home.

Additionally, you should clean the area beneath and around the mat to stop dirt from spreading back onto the newly cleaned doormat.

Dry Cleaning Methods

Dry cleaning methods are a great way to clean a coir doormat. Gently use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to lift and remove dirt. This will help protect delicate surfaces. You can also shake the mat vigorously outdoors to dislodge visible dirt.

For more stubborn dirt, try beating the mat against a wall or with a broom handle. This trio of vacuuming, shaking, and beating is key to preserving the colour and durability of your coir doormats.

Spot Cleaning for Stains

Spot cleaning is an effective method for handling stubborn stains on your coir doormat. For mud stains, let the mud dry completely before attempting to clean it with a stiff brush. For substances like chewing gum, a freeze spray can be used.

Pet stains, particularly urine or feces, can be challenging to remove due to the mat’s absorbent nature, and in severe cases, may necessitate replacement.

Gentle Scrubbing with Stiff Brushes

When cleaning your coir doormat, a stiff brush is better to remove dried dirt however for lighter marks it might be too harsh, so soft brushes are your go-to tool. They can effectively dislodge stubborn dirt without causing damage to the fibres or the colours. For effective cleaning, let any stains dry completely before brushing them gently.

Also, avoid jet washing as it could lead to waterlogging and potential damage to the mat’s fibres and colours. Remember, maintaining the longevity and appearance of your coloured coir doormat relies on using correct cleaning techniques.

Natural Solutions Over Harsh Chemicals

When it comes to deep cleaning, natural solutions prove to be the best choice. Using natural powder cleaners like bicarbonate of soda can tackle heavy soiling effectively while preserving the mat’s vibrant colours.

Dealing with Specific Stains on Coloured Coir Mats

Each type of stain requires a specific treatment. Dry foam or cleaning powder can be used for challenging stains, including oil or grease.

Pet stains, particularly urine, can be notoriously difficult to remove due to the mat’s absorbent nature, and if it is a consistent problem, looking at a synthetic alternative may be best as it does not absorb moisture.

Organic Stain Removal Techniques

Organic stains can be a challenge, but with the right techniques, they can be effectively removed. Baking soda is known for its effectiveness in removing tough stains from a variety of surfaces. Its neutralizing properties make it especially useful for organic stains that carry odours.

Handling Oil and Grease

Handling oil and grease stains on coir mats requires specific techniques. Applying a dry foam or cleaning powder can effectively tackle these stains. This method works by absorbing the oil or grease, making it easier to remove. Remember, the key is to act quickly to prevent the stain from setting in.

Ensuring Longevity of Coloured Coir Doormats

Securing the long life of your coloured coir doormat goes beyond mere routine cleaning. Proper maintenance, including for all Coloured Coir Matting as they are pvc backed mats used indoors only and in a mat well/recess and regular rotation, is crucial.

Signs that indicate it might be time to replace your mat include fading colour, flattened fibers, or cracks in any rubber backing. Regularly rotating your doormat can also ensure even wear and tear, preventing premature deterioration in one area due to concentrated weight and pressure.

Rotation and Replacement Advice

It’s crucial to rotate your coir doormat from time to time to facilitate uniform wear and prolong its lifespan. This helps prevent premature deterioration in one area due to concentrated weight and pressure.

A well-maintained coir doormat can be expected a good length of time before it may require replacement. Keeping an eye on the state of your mat and replacing it when necessary, ensures that it continues to serve its purpose effectively.

Seasonal Care for Your Coloured Coir Doormat

Your coir doormat needs special attention with changing seasons. Here are some tips to keep it in good condition:

  • In winter, protect your mat from damaging elements like snow, ice, and potentially salt.
  • In spring, more frequent cleaning is necessary to remove allergens that can dull the colors.
  • In summer and autumn, airing out your doormat can prevent damp-related issues.

With these seasonal care tips, your coir doormat will not only look good but also last longer.

Summary

Coloured coir doormats are not only visually appealing but also functional, effectively trapping dirt and debris. But to keep these mats looking their best, proper care and maintenance are crucial. From regular and deep cleaning to seasonal care, every step contributes to the longevity of your doormat. So, armed with these tips, you can now ensure that your coloured coir doormat remains vibrant and welcoming for years to come!

An Introduction to Coir Mats

Welcome to the world of coir, a remarkable and versatile material used in matting for homes around the globe. Coir mats, often called coco coir doormats, are derived from the husks of coconuts and offer a unique blend of beauty and practicality, making them an ideal choice for your doorstep.

What Is Coir?

Coir, a natural fibre, originates from the husk of coconuts. This tough and resilient material is harvested from coconut shells, offering an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fibres. The process involves separating the coir's outer layer from the inner shell, resulting in a durable and moisture-resistant product commonly utilised in coir doormats or entrance mats

What Are The Benefits?

Apart from just being visually appealing, coir doormats offer many advantages;

Eco-Friendly

Coir mats, made from the natural fibres of coconut husks, are an environmentally friendly choice. These natural products have no impact on coconut trees during extraction, making them an environmentally friendly and sustainable choice. Moreover, as they are made of natural raw materials, coconut husk coir door mats naturally break down over time, reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfills.

Durability and Longevity

Coir entrance mats are unbeatable when it comes to withstanding wear and tear. Crafted from coir fibres derived from coconut husks, these mats are highly suitable for areas with high levels of foot traffic. Whether it's the classic brown coir or those with additional PVC backing for extra strength, these mats resist abrasion and degradation, ensuring they remain functional and attractive for years, even under frequent use.

Design Versatility

The natural, rustic look of coir, particularly the classic brown coir, adds a warm, welcoming touch to any home décor. These entrance mats come in various designs, from simple elegance to intricate patterns, allowing customisation to your personal style. Beyond the natural coir, these mats can be dyed, printed, or customised to fit any aesthetic, making them a versatile choice for any home.

Practicality and Safety

One of the standout features of coir doormats is their ability to trap and retain dirt, mud and moisture effectively—ensuring that your indoor spaces stay clean and neat throughout. This feature is especially beneficial during weather conditions such as rain or snow. Moreover, the natural texture provides a surface that's not slippery, adding a safety element and reducing the chance of accidents in damp situations.

Cost-Effectiveness

The longevity and low maintenance needs of coir mats, particularly those with durable PVC backing, make them a cost-effective investment for the home. Unlike other types of mats that may require frequent replacements, coir mats stand the test of time, providing lasting value and reducing the need for repeated purchases.

Indoor and Outdoor Use

Exceptionally adaptable, coir mats excel in both indoor and outdoor environments. Their innate resistance to sunlight and great water absorbency ensure they withstand the rigours of outdoor elements without significant wear. In very wet locations it's important to shelter the coir door mat to prevent water logging. Inside the home environment, they are an effective barrier, preventing outdoor dirt and debris from entering your living spaces.

Maintenance Is Simple

Maintaining your coir mats, including the versatile coir doormat and the robust entrance mat, is refreshingly straightforward. These mats, crafted from natural fibres, can be easily kept clean with regular care. A quick shake or vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment can remove dirt from the tough bristles for everyday maintenance. You can brush the mat with a firm brush when a deeper clean is required. It's essential to make sure that these natural products, which are very absorbent are not cleaned with water. This is crucial in preventing staining and mildew or mould growth, thus preserving both the appearance and longevity of your doormat.

Coir doormats are a superb addition to any home, keeping a blend of lovely natural products and functionality. They are eco-friendly, durable and practical for keeping your floors clean while adding style to your living spaces.

FAQs

Let's answer some of your most frequently asked questions about the benefits of coir doormats:

Are Coir Mats Good For Indoor Use?

Absolutely! Coir mats are a great choice for indoor spaces. Their natural fibre construction is highly effective at trapping dirt and moisture, making them an ideal choice for entrance areas. Besides functionality, coir mats also add a welcoming natural touch to any indoor setting. To ensure their longevity and prevent any slip hazards, it's important to place them in areas where they can stay dry.

What Material Is Best For Doormats?

The best material for doormats varies based on individual needs and preferences. Coir is often considered a top choice due to its durability, eco-friendliness, and effective dirt and moisture-trapping capabilities. While materials like rubber, polypropylene, or nylon offer benefits such as increased water resistance or different aesthetics, coir matting stands out because of its qualities of being mindful of the environment while remaining resilient. This makes it a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor settings.

Can Coir Mats Be Left In The Rain?

Coir mats are incredibly durable and can withstand a certain amount of moisture. However, to prolong their lifespan, avoiding exposure to excessive moisture is advisable. Ever wondered what the difference is between Coir Matting and Coconut Matting?

The long and short answer is there isn't any difference, Coir Matting and Coconut Matting are the same type of entrance matting.

Coir matting is often known as Coconut matting. Natural coir fibres are a short, coarse texture fibre, extracted from the outer shell of coconuts, the husk. The coconut fibres appear when the coconut is mature and ready to be processed.

A dried coconut that has been split open showing the coconut or coir fibres ready to be extracted

How does it get from a coconut to the Coir fibres we need?

Once the coconut is mature and ready to be processed the husk will be left to soak in water over several months. In this time bacteria will eat away at the husk leaving only the raw coir fibres behind. Those coir fibres will then be placed inside a rotating drum which will help them to significantly loosen up. When the fibres are loose and ready to be used, they are then split into various groups depending on their length.

How the fibres are then made into a Coir mat

The coconut husk that has been extracted and spun into the coir yarn

Once the fibres have been extracted and split into their different groups, they are then spun into yarn using traditional wheels. Now they have been spun into yarn, they are then placed into big yarn balls.

Now the Coir yarn is ready they are woven together in various ways and secured to make the natural coir coconut matting we all know. This means Coir mats are available in numerous styles and sizes, so you can find the perfect mat for your home.

Our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat is lovingly hand-stitched here in our UK workshop from the highest quality coir. The natural coconut fibres make the mat tough enough to scrape the unwanted dirt and debris from your shoes.

100% Coir Matting that has been woven together, this is then used to make our high quality coir matting

Why is Coir the best way to go?

There are many reasons why a coir doormat is the best option, for residential or business over a regular mat. If you are unsure if it is the right matting for you, here are some reasons below:

Eco - Friendly

Our Handstitched and Standard Coir Doormats are 100% biodegradable and require no special disposal steps. Once you are ready to discard your Coir mat it can be simply put on your garden or compost bin, as it is an organic material it will not sustain any environmental damage.

Durable

Coir matting is made out of tough natural fibres meaning if you maintain them correctly, they can last for a long time before needing to be replaced. Coconut coir matting effectively traps dirt off shoes before it has the chance to be dragged through your home. For more information on maintaining your coir mat prior or purchasing take a look at our Care and Maintenance tips blog alternatively, all our orders are sent out with a care and fitting guide.

Removal of Water Moisture from shoes

The coconut matting can absorb significant amounts of moisture, which makes them ideal for stopping wet shoe prints from tracing through your house! It will also help prevent slips and falls by taking the moisture off the bottom of your shoes.

Please note, to help with the longevity of your coir matting we do not recommend placing any coir mat outside where it is directly exposed to the elements. As it is made from a natural material, if left sitting in water for long periods, this will increase the degradation of the coir matting. In the event of your coir matting getting wet. We recommend picking the mat up and allowing the mat and the area it is placed on to fully dry off before placing your coir coconut matting back down.

The different types of Coir matting we offer

PVC Backed Coir Matting

Our PVC Backed Coir Mats are perfect for mat wells. Here in our UK workshop, we will cut your mat to the size you have specified on your order. However, they can be also trimmed down to an exact fit in situ if you have an irregular shaped mat well.

PVC Backed Coir can be trimmed at home using a sharp utility knife

We do not recommend PVC Backed Coir for outdoor use as the PVC backing prevents the water from running away. However, if it becomes wet from shoes or umbrellas that is no problem as that’s what it is designed for; to remove the dirt and debris to stop it from tracing through your home.

Coloured Coir Coir Matting

Our Coloured Coir is also PVC backed meaning it is recommended for mat well use.

This matting is for indoor use only, if coloured coconut matting gets wet the colour will run.

Our coloured coir mailing comes in 17mm, however, for the popular colours like Black and Grey, these also come in 23mm thickness. For deeper mat wells, simply place a piece of plywood in the appropriate thickness underneath. Ensuring the top of the bristles lay flush with the floor to minimize the trip hazard.

Hand Stitched Made to Measure Coir Matting

The best alternative to coir matting is our Synthetic Coir Matting range, our most popular product is the Soft Man Made Coir Matting. This is a cut to size product that is 10mm thick.

It is a little softer underfoot than natural coir matting as it has more of a looped plie, than the bristle plie of natural coir matting.

It comes in a range of colours to help match to any decors. The best attribute of synthetic coir matting is the ability to withstand a heavier amount of moisture, along with harder cleaning. Unlike natural coir mats that cannot be saturated synthetic fibres do not take on water and will dry out much quicker.

An example of our Modern Edge Plain Coir Doormat

With its natural-looking appearance and scraping properties, it’s not surprising that coir is one of the most popular materials for door mats in the UK. As well as being practical and aesthetically pleasing, coir mats are inexpensive, versatile, and eco-friendly.

One of the few downsides to coir matting is that it sheds. Although this is natural, there are ways you can reduce shedding and wear, to prolong the life of your coir mat. Read on to find out how you can prevent your coir mat from excessive shedding and keep your entrance tidy.

Invest in good quality

Coir mats are available in different grades. Coir mats of a higher grade, such as heavy-duty or our premium grade mats, will shed less as the bristles are denser. Lower-grade coir mats may be cheaper but will deteriorate more quickly. So you will save more money over time by investing in a higher-quality mat that will last longer.

Installing your coir mat into a recess

Installing your coir matting  when your mat has no inherent borders such as PVC into a well or recess will help to keep your entrance tidy. As the edges of the mat will be encased beneath the surface, it will reduce shedding onto the floor.

The height of mat should be the same as the mat well or recess so that it sits flush within it and is level with the floor. This helps to prevent trips as well as shedding.

Vacuum and shake regularly

Take the mat outside and give it a shake to help get rid of any loose bristles. Do this when you first get a mat and continue to do so regularly to reduce shedding. If your mat is too large or too heavy to pick up then you may suction away the remaining debris with a vacuum with the brush attachment.

Trim with scissors

Use a pair of scissors to trim any loose or longer fibres which are protruding from the surface to help maintain the appearance of the matt and keep it tidy. Take care to only trim the excess and not cut into the mat and cause it to have an uneven surface.

Avoid excessive moisture

Coir mats are best placed in low-moisture areas, as excessive moisture can weaken the fibres in coir mats, leading to increased shedding.

Keep PVC coir mats indoors, or under cover or shelter, if possible, to keep it out of the rain. If located outdoors, rain will pool the PVC backing and the natural fibres will become sodden and damaged. If the mat does get wet, allow it and the area to thoroughly dry out before using it again. For outdoor use the better option is to go for a woven backed mat. For example our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat.

Rotating your coir mat

Occasionally rotating your coir mat will help to evenly distribute wear on the mat and can help to reduce shedding. Leaving your mat looking better for longer.

With regular maintenance and proper care, you will decrease shedding and extend the lifespan of your coir mat by years. Each mat will come with a care and fitting guide. However, for more advice on maintaining your coir mat, check out our top tips on how to care for your coir mat.

An Example of an irregular shaped mat

Some mat wells are not a standard size and will require an irregular shaped mat. Whilst you may want a coir mat for your home, you may be finding it a struggle to find one that fits your space and your needs. In these cases, a custom-made mat that is made to your specific dimensions is the best way to go.

Here is what to do if you need an irregular shaped mat.

Step 1- Determine the shape and size you need

This is the most crucial step as you need to ensure you know the exact measurements you need the coir mat to be. Measure the area where you want to place the mat and determine the shape you need. Keep in mind that an irregular shaped mat may require more complex measurements.

Option A- Dimensional drawing for an irregular shaped mat

If your mat well consists of 90-degree angles, then providing a dimensional drawing, like the one below, will often be sufficient.

Include exact measures and ensure all sides are included. Once you are happy with your dimensional drawing, simply email it to us at help@coirmats.co.uk  along with your name and contact details.

Dimensional Drawing
An example of a dimensional drawing for a irregular shaped mat that consists of 90- degree angles

If you want a semi-circle design then please send a diagram similar to below:

Semi-circle design
An example of a true semi-circle dimensional drawing

Please note: the design above is for a true semi-circle. If the shape you need doesn’t contain a 90-degree angle, please use the template method below instead.

Option B- A template for an irregular shaped mat

In many cases, mat wells are not exact 90-degree angles and whilst this can be more challenging, it is something that can be overcome by creating a life-size template. Use thick paper such as wallpaper or a paper tablecloth to draw out the exact shape of your mat well. Once you are happy with the measurements, cut out the template and double-check it fits perfectly in your mat well. The last thing you want is to order your custom mat, only to realise it doesn’t fit when it arrives.

Before you send the template to us, make sure you mark on what side of the template the door will be as well as which side is the top. This is important information that will make it easier to create your mat in our workshop.

Send your templates to: Coir Mats, Unit 14, Sadler Rd, Lincoln, LN6 3RG

If you require any additional information then please do not hesitate to get in touch. Email us at help@coirmats.co.uk or call 020 8305 5357.

Whichever method you choose, it is important to be as specific as possible to ensure that you get the exact mat you want. Unlike PVC baked mats, traditional handstitched edged coir mats are not able to be trimmed once they have been delivered, therefore exact measures are vital to get the best end results.

Step 2- Choose Your Mat

Coir Mats can come in various designs, colours, and edging. You can select a design that best matches your home’s aesthetic or a personalised design to make your mat completely one of a kind.

Not sure what you are exactly after?  We offer a variety of different coir matting:

Hand stitched-

Our Hand Stitched Coir Doormats are ideal for period properties. They are traditional coir mats which are lovingly handcrafted from the highest quality coir in our workshop to your specific dimensions. These mats are suitable for mat well use as well as being laid straight onto to the floor. These traditionally made mats have a woven backing rather than a PVC backing, this means they are suitable for areas likely to get wet as the woven backing allows the mat to try out quicker, meaning it will last longer.

PVC Backed Coir & Coloured Coir-

Our PVC Backed Coir Doormats are, easy to lay and designed for mat wells. Coir is a hard wearing, absorbent and has a strong brushing action to remove dirt from shoes helping to protect your floors. It is also easy to trim with the use of a sharp knife to get that snug fit. We offer three grades of PVC Backed Coir matting:

Budget – This matting is our lowest cost option but it still provides a strong brushing action to remove the unwanted dirt from your shoes. However, it will shed slightly more and won’t last as long, so it is ideal for pricing and temporary matting.

Premium – This matting offers the largest range in thickness going from 14mm to 30mm.  It is ideal for unusual/irregular shapes,  is a good value for money and is our recommendation for residential homes.

Heavy Duty –This matting is our hardest wearing, highest quality coir matting. If you are looking for the best quality coir for your home, offices or public buildings with heavy footfall then this is the perfect choice. This matting is also DDA compliant and therefor suitable for wheelchair users. It does cost slightly more but when you will get a lot of use it is a worthwhile investment.

Coloured Coir-

Our Coloured Coir comes in numerous colour variations.  The main thing to consider is whether you are wanting your mat to blend in or make a statement. This matting has a PVC Backing meaning it is the perfect choice for your mat well. We recommend it is used for indoor use. If located outdoors, rain will pool the PVC backing and the natural fibres will become sodden and damaged.

Synthetic Coir –

Our Golden Brown Synthetic Coir

Our synthetic Coir is a non-shedding synthetic mat that comes in 3 colours. It only comes in 9mm thick so it is ideal for use where there are low clearance issues. It has a similar brush action to natural coir which makes it very hard wearing and great at removing dirt. This type of matting can also be spot cleaned to remove marks and is less prone to staining.

Step 3- Our workshop gets to work creating your irregular shaped mat

Once we have received your template, we will then contact you with a quote. If you are happy with the quote given and we have received payment, then our skilled workshop team will get started on making your irregular shaped mat to your exact specification.

Step 4-  Sit back, relax, and wait for your bespoke mat to arrive

Once you have ordered your irregular shaped mat, all you have to do is sit back, relax, and wait for your mat to arrive. Please note that due to the bespoke nature of these products, made-to-measure mats will inevitably take slightly longer to deliver.

Once your mat arrives, use our care and fitting guide which provides everything you need to know.

Whilst finding the perfect coir mat to fit an awkwardly shaped mat well, you need may feel like a challenge and whilst it involves a bit more effort, the results are amazing. Taking the extra time to measure the area and choose the mat that best fits your needs will leave you with a perfect-fitting irregular shaped mat that looks great, will last, and is completely unique to you.

Our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat - Hand Stitched to order in our UK workshops.

We pride ourselves on our Made in England doormats, which are hand stitched the way they have been for generations. It's a skill that we are proud to keep alive, right here in our Lincolnshire workshops.

Since 2018, we have trained a new generation of mat makers in this heritage skill,

We are registered with Made in Britain.org and Make It British.co.uk. These are well-respected independent organisations that expect us to meet a high standard of integrity for our processes and labeling before they will allow us to use their logos to claim that we make products in Britain

What you want to know:

One of the questions we are sometimes asked is: Are all of your products made in England?

In a world where it's hard to know whether what you are hearing or reading is true, and some major brands put union jack logos on products that are made very far from our shores it is understandable that you would want to be sure of our claims.

In this blog post, we will explain all.

Short Answer:

The short answer is no, not everything we sell is made in the UK.

Made in England Products:

Our Made in the UK products are anything that is custom-made to order, such as our:

Products that we import:

That might be enough for you, as the reasons for this are many and varied, so it's potentially a long answer. However, if we've piqued your interest and you'd like to understand more read on. We'll explain why not everything in our range is made in England below.

Our standard sized doormats are made for us in Sri Lanka and India
Our standard-sized doormats are made for us in Sri Lanka and India

Long Answer:

Our materials

Most of our products are made from coir fibre. This incredibly sustainable material is a by-product of coconut production. In fact, the brown hairy coconuts that we recognise from the supermarket shelves have an outer casing on them when they grow on a palm tree. A sort of outer shell, a bit like the green outer casing around a horse chestnut or conker.

The inner part of this coconut husk is very fibrous. This is soaked, teased and spun into the yarn that doormats are made from.

Our climate

The UK climate does not support growing coconuts, they grow all over the world but not here in the UK. Southern India and Sri Lanka are very good at growing coconut and an entire industry is based there in growing and producing coconuts and their by-products.

We partner with factories there who make the particular grade of coir that we need. We then import huge rolls of this material to the UK in container loads by sea. It is from this material we make our smaller hand-stitched and cut-to-size doormats in our Lincolnshire workshops.

UK manufacturing

Sadly, there are currently no UK factories with the correct looms to weave the tufted woven-backed coir we need. Nor are there any UK factories producing the rolls of PVC-backed material so we select carefully chosen partners who can make the right grade of material for us.

As a result, we have to import this to the UK and from this material we make our customised products.

The same factories that make our giant rolls also make our standard-sized mats in India and Sri Lanka. What's more, the coir is the same quality, but they arrive in the UK ready-made for us in a wide range of sizes.

We make our personalised mats on custom-sized or standard-sized mats, and we make them in our Lincolnshire workshops.

Proudly we make all our logo mats here in the UK.

Our supply partners

We have supply partners in India, Sri Lanka, Italy, and The Netherlands. Our supply partners are chosen very carefully to ensure a quality product and an ethical, responsible supply chain.

We hope that this has cleared things up for you but if you have any more questions at all please don't hesitate to get in touch with our customer service team.

They are based here in our Lincolnshire offices and available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm to answer any questions you may have.

A cleaning brush is perfect to help maintain your coir mat

Coir mats can last a long time, as long as it is maintained and cleaned correctly. Do you remember the last time you washed your mat? Don’t worry, mats are often something people overlook when it comes to cleaning tasks around their home, despite mats having to deal with regular foot traffic. However, here are some of our top care and maintenance tips for coir mats to make the job simple.

What is coir matting made of?

Coir mats are made of husks of coconut shells, and this rough material is ideal for creating a durable mat that is hard-wearing, absorbent and perfect for removing stubborn dirt off shoes before it has a chance to be dragged through your home.

Top coir mat care and maintenance tips

PVC backed mats

PVC Backed Coir Matting
PVC Backed Mats

Place them indoors

It is important to note that PVC-backed coir mats are NOT made for external use. When it rains, the water will pool on the PVC backing and soak the natural coir fibres, causing them to rot.

Fit them in a mat well

Our PVC-backed coir mats do not have inherent borders, making them ideal to be fitted into a mat well. Not only does this look great, but it also helps protect the edges of the mat and can help them last longer.

Turn upside down

Every now and then, turn your mat upside down and give them a shake. This will remove the dirt that has built up over time, without damaging the coir fibers.

Avoid direct sunlight

If your mat has coloured coir, avoid placing them in direct sunlight. Extensive sun exposure can lead to the mat fading.

Printed Coir Mats

Printed Coir Mats
Printed Coir Mats

Place indoors

All our printed coir mats should be placed indoors or in a sheltered area outside such as a porch. Being careful with where you are placing can help make your mat last a lot longer.

Avoid moisture

Part of the reason why indoor locations are best for printed coir mats is that excessive moisture will make the mat degrade quicker and you may find the design starts to wear off.

Woven-Backed Coir Mats

Woven-Backed Coir Mats
Woven-Backed Coir Mats

Allow Draining

Whilst our woven-backed coir mats are best placed indoors if they are kept outside and become wet, lift the mat from time to time and allow the mat to drain and dry out. The excess moisture will cause the mat to degrade at a quicker rate so keep them dry as much as possible.

Avoid vacuuming

It can be tempting to grab your vacuum straight away when your mat needs cleaning but don’t do this. A vacuum can pull and cause the coir strands to unravel. This can lead to “rat tails” forming or gaps appearing in the coir which is unsightly. If you do use your vacuum, use it with caution and opt for the brush attachment.

Synthetic Coir Mats

Synthetic Coir Matting

Start with vacuuming

Unlike traditional coir mats, synthetic mats can be vacuumed to remove the surface dirt and are the perfect place to start when it comes to cleaning.

Use water for spot cleaning

Water mixed with a mild detergent can be used to spot clean. However, you mustn't use too much water or get the mat too wet. Saturating the mat regularly can reduce the life of your doormat over time. If it does become drenched, lift the mat and allow excess water to drain away.

General Coir Mat Care and Maintenance Tips

Don’t worry about shedding

As coir is a natural material, you should expect a bit of shedding. This is completely normal and will settle. Give the mat a shake as this will help remove any loose pieces. Do not be tempted to overly vacuum the mat or pull at the threads as this could cause damage.

Avoid strong detergents

Strong detergents and solvents should be avoided as they can end up causing marks and discolouration over time. Solvents can also cause the PVC backing to expand which can damage the coir fibres.

Use dry cleaning products

Also, opt for a dry cleaner as opposed to something water-based. You can easily create your own cleaning powder by mixing cornstarch with baking soda (or purchasing a specific cleaner) Sprinkle the powder on, leave for atleast 30 minutes, and then vacuum to remove. This will keep the mat fresh, and remove odours, whilst also protecting the colour.

Don’t put it in the washing machine

As tempting as it can be, you cannot put your traditional coir mat in the washing machine. They are heavy which can be too much for the washing machine drum to handle and you could end up damaging the mat and machine at the same time.

Invest in a brush

With all dirt that comes onto your mat, it is best to let it dry. Then once it has dried use a stiff brush to remove the dirt. Then just give it a shake outside.

Use freeze spray when necessary

For tough stains such as chewing gum, get the freeze spray which can help remove it from the coir fibres.

How often should I clean coir mats?

Whilst there is no one rule as it depends on how much foot traffic the mat sees, you should aim to deep clean the mat atleast once a month with regular vacuums in between. You may want to increase deep clean frequency during muddy winter months.

Cleaning doormats can be a pain however doormats are the first line of defence for keeping the rest of the floors in your home clean. Therefore, you must incorporate your mat into your regular cleaning routine to keep it looking its best.
