One of the few downsides to coir matting is that it sheds. Although this is natural, there are ways you can reduce shedding and wear, to prolong the life of your coir mat. Read on to find out how you can prevent your coir mat from excessive shedding and keep your entrance tidy.
Invest in good quality
Coir mats are available in different grades. Coir mats of a higher grade, such as heavy-duty or our premium grade mats, will shed less as the bristles are denser. Lower-grade coir mats may be cheaper but will deteriorate more quickly. So you will save more money over time by investing in a higher-quality mat that will last longer.
Installing your coir mat into a recess
Installing your coir matting when your mat has no inherent borders such as PVC into a well or recess will help to keep your entrance tidy. As the edges of the mat will be encased beneath the surface, it will reduce shedding onto the floor.
The height of mat should be the same as the mat well or recess so that it sits flush within it and is level with the floor. This helps to prevent trips as well as shedding.
Vacuum and shake regularly
Take the mat outside and give it a shake to help get rid of any loose bristles. Do this when you first get a mat and continue to do so regularly to reduce shedding. If your mat is too large or too heavy to pick up then you may suction away the remaining debris with a vacuum with the brush attachment.
Trim with scissors
Use a pair of scissors to trim any loose or longer fibres which are protruding from the surface to help maintain the appearance of the matt and keep it tidy. Take care to only trim the excess and not cut into the mat and cause it to have an uneven surface.
Avoid excessive moisture
Coir mats are best placed in low-moisture areas, as excessive moisture can weaken the fibres in coir mats, leading to increased shedding.
Keep PVC coir mats indoors, or under cover or shelter, if possible, to keep it out of the rain. If located outdoors, rain will pool the PVC backing and the natural fibres will become sodden and damaged. If the mat does get wet, allow it and the area to thoroughly dry out before using it again. Some mat wells are not a standard size and will require an irregular shaped mat. Whilst you may want a coir mat for your home, you may be finding it a struggle to find one that fits your space and your needs. In these cases, a custom-made mat that is made to your specific dimensions is the best way to go.
Here is what to do if you need an irregular shaped mat.
Step 1- Determine the shape and size you need
This is the most crucial step as you need to ensure you know the exact measurements you need the coir mat to be. Measure the area where you want to place the mat and determine the shape you need. Keep in mind that an irregular shaped mat may require more complex measurements.
Option A- Dimensional drawing for an irregular shaped mat
If your mat well consists of 90-degree angles, then providing a dimensional drawing, like the one below, will often be sufficient.
Include exact measures and ensure all sides are included. Once you are happy with your dimensional drawing, simply email it to us at help@coirmats.co.uk along with your name and contact details.
If you want a semi-circle design then please send a diagram similar to below:
Please note: the design above is for a true semi-circle. If the shape you need doesn’t contain a 90-degree angle, please use the template method below instead.
Option B- A template for an irregular shaped mat
In many cases, mat wells are not exact 90-degree angles and whilst this can be more challenging, it is something that can be overcome by creating a life-size template. Use thick paper such as wallpaper or a paper tablecloth to draw out the exact shape of your mat well. Once you are happy with the measurements, cut out the template and double-check it fits perfectly in your mat well. The last thing you want is to order your custom mat, only to realise it doesn’t fit when it arrives.
Before you send the template to us, make sure you mark on what side of the template the door will be as well as which side is the top. This is important information that will make it easier to create your mat in our workshop.

Unlike PVC baked mats, traditional handstitched edged coir mats are not able to be trimmed once they have been delivered, therefore exact measures are vital to get the best end results.

Hand stitched-
Our Hand Stitched Coir Doormats are ideal for period properties. They are traditional coir mats which are lovingly handcrafted from the highest quality coir in our workshop to your specific dimensions. These mats are suitable for mat well use as well as being laid straight onto to the floor. These traditionally made mats have a woven backing rather than a PVC backing, this means they are suitable for areas likely to get wet as the woven backing allows the mat to try out quicker, meaning it will last longer.
PVC Backed Coir & Coloured Coir-
Our PVC Backed Coir Doormats are, easy to lay and designed for mat wells. Coir is a hard wearing, absorbent and has a strong brushing action to remove dirt from shoes helping to protect your floors. It is also easy to trim with the use of a sharp knife to get that snug fit. We offer three grades of PVC Backed Coir matting:
Budget – This matting is our lowest cost option but it still provides a strong brushing action to remove the unwanted dirt from your shoes. However, it will shed slightly more and won’t last as long, so it is ideal for pricing and temporary matting.
Premium – This matting offers the largest range in thickness going from 14mm to 30mm. It is ideal for unusual/irregular shapes, is a good value for money and is our recommendation for residential homes.
Heavy Duty –This matting is our hardest wearing, highest quality coir matting. If you are looking for the best quality coir for your home, offices or public buildings with heavy footfall then this is the perfect choice. This matting is also DDA compliant and therefor suitable for wheelchair users. It does cost slightly more but when you will get a lot of use it is a worthwhile investment.
Coloured Coir-
Our Coloured Coir comes in numerous colour variations. The main thing to consider is whether you are wanting your mat to blend in or make a statement. This matting has a PVC Backing meaning it is the perfect choice for your mat well. We recommend it is used for indoor use. If located outdoors, rain will pool the PVC backing and the natural fibres will become sodden and damaged.
Synthetic Coir –
Our synthetic Coir is a non-shedding synthetic mat that comes in 3 colours. It only comes in 9mm thick so it is ideal for use where there are low clearance issues. It has a similar brush action to natural coir which makes it very hard wearing and great at removing dirt. This type of matting can also be spot cleaned to remove marks and is less prone to staining.

In a world where it's hard to know whether what you are hearing or reading is true, and some major brands put union jack logos on products that are made very far from our shores it is understandable that you would want to be sure of our claims.
In this blog post, we will explain all.
Short Answer:
The short answer is no, not everything we sell is made in the UK.
Made in England Products:
Our Made in the UK products are anything that is custom-made to order, such as our:

- Our Logo Mats
Products that we import:
- Our standard sized coir mats
- Our rubber mats
- Our raw materials for our customised products.
That might be enough for you, as the reasons for this are many and varied, so it's potentially a long answer. However, if we've piqued your interest and you'd like to understand more read on. We'll explain why not everything in our range is made in England below.
Long Answer:
Our materials
Most of our products are made from coir fibre. This incredibly sustainable material is a by-product of coconut production. In fact, the brown hairy coconuts that we recognise from the supermarket shelves have an outer casing on them when they grow on a palm tree. A sort of outer shell, a bit like the green outer casing around a horse chestnut or conker.
The inner part of this coconut husk is very fibrous. This is soaked, teased and spun into the yarn that doormats are made from.
Our climate
The UK climate does not support growing coconuts, they grow all over the world but not here in the UK. Southern India and Sri Lanka are very good at growing coconut and an entire industry is based there in growing and producing coconuts and their by-products.
We partner with factories there who make the particular grade of coir that we need. We then import huge rolls of this material to the UK in container loads by sea. It is from this material we make our smaller hand-stitched and cut-to-size doormats in our Lincolnshire workshops.
UK manufacturing
Sadly, there are currently no UK factories with the correct looms to weave the tufted woven-backed coir we need. Nor are there any UK factories producing the rolls of PVC-backed material so we select carefully chosen partners who can make the right grade of material for us.
As a result, we have to import this to the UK and from this material we make our customised products.
The same factories that make our giant rolls also make our standard-sized mats in India and Sri Lanka. What's more, the coir is the same quality, but they arrive in the UK ready-made for us in a wide range of sizes.
We make our personalised mats on custom-sized or standard-sized mats, and we make them in our Lincolnshire workshops.

Coir mats can last a long time, as long as it is maintained and cleaned correctly. Do you remember the last time you washed your mat? Don’t worry, mats are often something people overlook when it comes to cleaning tasks around their home, despite mats having to deal with regular foot traffic. However, here are some of our top care and maintenance tips for coir mats to make the job simple.
What is coir matting made of?
Coir mats are made of husks of coconut shells, and this rough material is ideal for creating a durable mat that is hard-wearing, absorbent and perfect for removing stubborn dirt off shoes before it has a chance to be dragged through your home.
Top coir mat care and maintenance tips
PVC backed mats
Place them indoors
It is important to note that PVC-backed coir mats are NOT made for external use. When it rains, the water will pool on the PVC backing and soak the natural coir fibres, causing them to rot.
Fit them in a mat well
Our PVC-backed coir mats do not have inherent borders, making them ideal to be fitted into a mat well. Not only does this look great, but it also helps protect the edges of the mat and can help them last longer.
Turn upside down
Every now and then, turn your mat upside down and give them a shake. This will remove the dirt that has built up over time, without damaging the coir fibers.
Avoid direct sunlight
If your mat has coloured coir, avoid placing them in direct sunlight. Extensive sun exposure can lead to the mat fading.
Printed Coir Mats
Place indoors
All our printed coir mats should be placed indoors or in a sheltered area outside such as a porch. Being careful with where you are placing can help make your mat last a lot longer.
Avoid moisture
Part of the reason why indoor locations are best for printed coir mats is that excessive moisture will make the mat degrade quicker and you may find the design starts to wear off.
Woven-Backed Coir Mats
Allow Draining
Whilst our woven-backed coir mats are best placed indoors if they are kept outside and become wet, lift the mat from time to time and allow the mat to drain and dry out. The excess moisture will cause the mat to degrade at a quicker rate so keep them dry as much as possible.
Avoid vacuuming
It can be tempting to grab your vacuum straight away when your mat needs cleaning but don’t do this. A vacuum can pull and cause the coir strands to unravel. This can lead to “rat tails” forming or gaps appearing in the coir which is unsightly. If you do use your vacuum, use it with caution and opt for the brush attachment.
Synthetic Coir Mats
Start with vacuuming
Unlike traditional coir mats, synthetic mats can be vacuumed to remove the surface dirt and are the perfect place to start when it comes to cleaning.
Use water for spot cleaning
Water mixed with a mild detergent can be used to spot clean. However, you mustn't use too much water or get the mat too wet. Saturating the mat regularly can reduce the life of your doormat over time. If it does become drenched, lift the mat and allow excess water to drain away.
General Coir Mat Care and Maintenance Tips
Don’t worry about shedding
As coir is a natural material, you should expect a bit of shedding. This is completely normal and will settle. Give the mat a shake as this will help remove any loose pieces. Do not be tempted to overly vacuum the mat or pull at the threads as this could cause damage.
Avoid strong detergents
Strong detergents and solvents should be avoided as they can end up causing marks and discolouration over time. Solvents can also cause the PVC backing to expand which can damage the coir fibres.
Use dry cleaning products
Also, opt for a dry cleaner as opposed to something water-based. You can easily create your own cleaning powder by mixing cornstarch with baking soda (or purchasing a specific cleaner) Sprinkle the powder on, leave for atleast 30 minutes, and then vacuum to remove. This will keep the mat fresh, and remove odours, whilst also protecting the colour.
Don’t put it in the washing machine
As tempting as it can be, you cannot put your traditional coir mat in the washing machine. They are heavy which can be too much for the washing machine drum to handle and you could end up damaging the mat and machine at the same time.
Invest in a brush
With all dirt that comes onto your mat, it is best to let it dry. Then once it has dried use a stiff brush to remove the dirt. Then just give it a shake outside.
Use freeze spray when necessary
For tough stains such as chewing gum, get the freeze spray which can help remove it from the coir fibres.
How often should I clean coir mats?
Whilst there is no one rule as it depends on how much foot traffic the mat sees, you should aim to deep clean the mat atleast once a month with regular vacuums in between. You may want to increase deep clean frequency during muddy winter months.

Coir mats come in different thicknesses, bearing this in mind, mats that are 40mm are typically best suited for these homes. Our traditional Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat comes in 25mm to 40mm thickness. This is due to the low floors and high doors. Just measure in advance to ensure the thickness of the mat is suitable for the space and will have enough clearance space for doors to open.
Design
For a period property, choose a coir mat that complements the overall style of the property. Look for designs that are in keeping with the architecture of the building, or ones that have a traditional or vintage look.

Coconut fibres, also known as coir, have several properties that make them a great material to use for doormats. Here are some reasons why coconut is commonly used for this purpose:
Water Absorption
Coir has excellent water absorption capabilities. When used as a doormat, it can effectively trap moisture from shoes, preventing it from being tracked into the house. This is particularly useful in the rainy climate of the UK.
However, coir is not made for excessive amounts of water. If the mat was to be saturated it would stain and end up bleaching the coconut fibres.
Dirt and debris trapping
Coconut fibres have a rough texture, which helps to scrape off dirt, dust and debris from the soles of shoes. The bristly nature of coir mats makes them highly effective in trapping and holding onto particles. This prevents the particles from being spread into the house.
Natural and Sustainable
Coconut fibres are derived from the outer husk of coconuts, making them a natural and renewable resource. Using coir doormats promotes sustainability. Woven backed coir doormats are made from organic materials that have not been in contact with any harmful chemicals – if you’re looking for eco-friendly mats, I would recommend our standard mats, they’re all 100% organic. Such as our latex, braided or luxury mats. If your looking for a mat that needs to be cut to size, then the PVC made to measure is a good option. The coir is still natural however the backing being PVC uses glue and oil which does not make it 100% eco-friendly.
One of the things that make coconuts the perfect material is that it is only the husks that are used to create the mats and if this wasn’t used to create items such as this, they would just end up being in landfill as they are essentially a waste product. Instead, they now have a new lease of life and a great practical use being made into coir products.
Switching to more eco-friendly products, such as woven backed coir mats, is a simple change that is also a great way to have a positive impact on the environment. You are also supporting economies primarily across Asia, where local farmers are preparing and drying the coconut husks for your mat.
Slip resistance
Our PVC Backed Coir Doormats have very little grip. That’s why we recommend to be in a matwell, if wanted to be free standing the anti-slip underlay would be the option to use so the mat would gain more of a grip and it helps keep the mat in place. Our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat can be used in a mat well or laid straight onto the floor due to the woven backing.
Why Coir is low maintenance
Coir doormats are relatively easy to maintain. They can be cleaned by simply shaking, or using a specific coir mat brush to get rid of the accumulated dirt. If mud or wet dirt gets into the mat it is recommended to let it dry. Then use one of our coir brushes to help clean it and get the coir mat to how it was previously. We do not advise vacuuming our coir products as this can disrupt the fibres.

While coir doormats have many advantages, it’s worth noting that they may not be suitable for every environment. In extremely wet or humid conditions, coir mats can retain moisture and take longer to dry. This may affect their durability overtime. The type of footfall your entrance gets will help determine the type of mat
The level of footfall your entrance receives will help determine on which mat is best for your area. We offer 3 different grades of PVC Backed matting, each one perfect for a different footfall:
Budget Coir – Our lowest cost option PVC Backed Coir matting. It still has good brushing action and is effective at removing dirt. However, it will shed a little more and the fibres can become bent overtime. This matting is recommend for minimal footfall or as a temporary matting option.
Premium Coir – Our most popular PVC Backed matting. It is our recommended option for residential homes. It is a hardwearing, absorbent, long lasting mat with a strong brushing action to remove dirt from shoes, helping to protect your floors.
Heavy Duty Coir – This is our hardest wearing and highest quality matting. It is perfect for heavy footfall, with denser and more compact fibres making it our most durable. Our Heavy duty is also DDA compliant therefore suitable for wheelchair users. This is our recommended matting for businesses and offices.
We wouldn't recommend these three grades of matting to be located outdoors or freestanding. The PVC mats are designed for matwells and therefor supplied without borders. Stepping on the unsupported edges can cause the sides to bend and buckle. This can also pose as a trip hazard. If located outdoors, rain will pool the PVC backing and the natural fibres will become sodden and damaged.
Is your Coir mat free standing or will it be in a mat well recess?
For free standing we would recommend our woven backed matting with a range of edges making them perfect for free standing. For example our Bespoke Hand Made Coir Doormat. They are more suitable for use in areas likely to get wet, the woven backing allows this mat to dry out quicker and therefore last longer.
Our PVC backed doormats are perfect for mat wells as they’re all cut to your specific dimensions, we offer different thicknesses for your door clearance such as – 14mm, 17mm, 20mm,24mm and 30mm.
Door clearance and the depth of your matwell
The door clearance is important to know as it determines the thickness of matting to order, if you have little door clearance and order a thickness that’s higher than the door clearance, the door will not open. Which is why we advise measuring the gap between bottom of door to the floor, to order the best thickness of matting for you.
If we don’t have the exact thickness, you want no problem! If you have a deeper matwell and need a thickness above 30mm, you can solve this using plywood. Simply put a piece of plywood of the appropriate thickness into the well and place your mat on top. The top of the bristles should lie flush with the floor to minimize the trip hazard.

History of Coir Doormats
The beginning of coir cottage industry in India
The first recorded coconut in India dates back to the 3rd century BC in the Ramayana period. Even in ancient times, the coir from the coconut husks proved to be a fantastic manufacturing material, being used to make ropes for ships for use as cables and rigging.
The UK coir industry
Then in the 1800s, the coir industry started to be brought to the UK, with well-known carpet companies creating floor coverings using coir. Traditional coir doormats have been made in the UK for hundreds of years, becoming more popular as people revered coir for the ability to scrape dirt and grime easily whilst also being absorbent- the perfect material for doormats!
The evolution of traditional coir doormats
Over time, coir mats have continued to grow in popularity with many designs and shapes being created. However, the majority of these mats are now rubber-backed. Whilst these have the benefit of being able to be used outdoors and being able to be mass-produced, the art of traditional coir mats has unfortunately dramatically declined over the years.

Our family has been making mats for 30 years and whilst many companies have stopped offering hand-stitched traditional coir mats, opting for the mass production alternatives instead, we have vowed to continue producing high-quality, hand-finished products. Our workshop team is highly skilled and it is great to pass on the skills to new generations in the hope to continue the beautiful skill of creating traditional coir doormats.
